Improving the Lawline Live Webcast Experience
Live continuing legal education (CLE) has a challenge that's hard to solve: keeping viewers engaged. When you're watching a webcast that runs an hour or longer, it's easy to lose focus, get pulled away by an email, or simply zone out for a few minutes. When you come back, you're left wondering what you missed and where the discussion has gone.
With a small remote staff producing live webcasts, our workflow prioritized streamlined production, which meant limited capacity for experimenting with dynamic live graphics. Our production team wanted to change that and partnered with development to explore AI solutions that could generate helpful visual cues throughout the broadcast. However, none of the tools we found integrated seamlessly with our specific production workflow and needs…
So we built it ourselves.
How It Works
Our development team created an in-house solution that analyzes the live transcript as a course progresses. It runs continuously in the background, using AI to examine different timeframes depending on the use case.
-
For identifying the current topic, it looks at just the last 20 seconds.
-
For surfacing practical takeaways, it reviews the last 10 minutes.
We can expand this to analyze the full session if a use case calls for it, like comprehensive end-of-course summaries, for example.
The system pushes its output to a cloud-based graphics platform that our stream operators control. When the AI identifies a new topic or a useful takeaway, that text becomes available to fill its graphic and the operator can display at their discretion. The stream operator stays in control, allowing a chance to proofread what is displayed and when.
We're currently generating three types of live graphics:
-
Current topic that helps viewers track where the discussion is at the moment
-
Covered topics that help viewers see what's been discussed so far
-
Practical takeaways that highlight actionable insights as they emerge
The goal is simple: make our live webcasts easier to follow and more valuable to watch.
Now Live
We've already put this into production. The Ever Evolving Access to Experimental Treatments: Expanded Access to Medical Tourism in Montana was used to test our graphics workflow with the live graphics baked into the final video, and How to Avoid Mistakes and to Comply with Your Ethical Obligations When Overseeing Your Trust Account (Update) was our first full live deployment. Look out for these enhancements in future live webcasts!
What's Next
Next up, we're working on automatically surfacing questions that viewers submit during live Q&A segments. When a moderator forwards a question to faculty, the stream operator will have that text ready to overlay the moment the discussion begins.
Stay tuned for more to come.
