In the spirit of the holidays, we asked a few of Lawline’s faculty where they most love to spend the holidays in their favorite cities. Ranging from theaters to holiday markets to the absolute best calzones and donuts, they had many wonderful - and classic - recommendations:
- Boston. The Boston Children’s Museum is the best spot for a family trip around the holidays, says Christian Park. He touts the venue as a wonderful trip to take if you’re a parent like him - you’ll really enjoy the time with your kids. “The Children's Museum in Boston is great for kids! Easy on the wallet, too; if you go on Friday evenings, and it's only $1.”
- Chicago. “A really great place to celebrate the holidays in Chicago is at the Christkindlmarkt on the Daley Center Plaza,” says Paul Burmeister, “it is a slice of Germany right downtown. A good spot to meet up with friends or visit with your family and pick up some holiday cheer.”
- Los Angeles. Benjamin Shatz can’t speak highly enough of the Farmers’ Market in downtown Santa Monica. “It is gorgeous, festive, and iconically L.A.,” raves Shatz. “We are so lucky to have temperate weather and great produce all throughout the holiday season. You can shop like a chef and enjoy cooking at home later with the highest quality ingredients.” He also recommends Shutters on the Beach. “The views of the ocean, the Santa Monica Pier, and passersby is always a treat.”
- New York. “I love to walk so I enjoy seeing the tree at Rockefeller Center,” says New Yorker Amy Goldsmith. Proof that, while a staple for visitors from all over the world, the tree is not just another tourist attraction.
- Philadelphia. Michael Brusca says “My favorite all around place to visit is the Reading Terminal Market. They have many awesome places inside, including Olde City Coffee which is the best coffee in the city (IMHO!)” He also highly recommends the apple dumpling from the Dutch Eating Place (“it only lasted for about 30 seconds”), the pies and doughnuts at Beiler’s, and The Dandelion - particularly if you like oysters!
- Washington, D.C. Stephen Ramaley’s initial response was: “You’ve asked the right guy - I do a lot of celebrating!” Stephen recommends the Wharf in D.C. proper, but notes that a lot of folks leave the capital for the holidays so it can be a bit quiet. “Old Town Alexandria at night is the way to go,” he says, adding, “If you like scotch, cigars and live music, head up the narrow staircase at Basin St. Lounge off King St.”
- Sacramento. "It's not technically for a holiday, but the most exciting thing that happens here in December is the California International Marathon,” says Kristina Launey, who just ran a leg of the relay challenge. “Just in time for the holidays, the route goes through the city, ending right in front of the state capital and the big tree that goes up each year." Kristina also recommends checking out a true Christmas tradition: the Fabulous Forties. “They go all-out with decorations,” she says. “Walking through is absolutely one of my favorite things to do to celebrate the holiday season."
- St. Louis. St. Louis “has some really great spots to celebrate the holidays with family and friends,” says Roman Basi. “While St. Louis may be known better for its baseball history, it becomes a true hockey town in winter. To be downtown and go to a game and then enjoy the rest of the city – that starts off a great weekend for me.” He also recommends taking in a show at the Fabulous Fox Theatre, strolling around historic downtown, and enjoying the shopping and different restaurants St. Louis has to offer. In the hill area, he suggests lunch or dinner at Zia’s on the Hill, shopping at the St. Louis Galleria or the upscale shops of the Plaza Frontenac. If you stay downtown, “Sauce on the Side will give you a new reason to fall in love with calzones.”
