[VIDEO] A Meditation Practice to Combat Implicit Bias and Promote Mindfulness

Written by Lawline Staff Writer | Feb 24, 2020 3:30:00 PM

Stressed at work? In this clip, Wendy Star and Cecilia Loving, attorneys and diversity and inclusion strategists at the Fire Department of the City of New York, walk attorneys through a mindfulness breathing exercise designed to focus the attention on overcoming implicit bias in the workplace and beyond.

Begin the exercise by breathing in and out slowly.

As you breathe in and out, focus your energy on the awareness of other people’s experiences and pain. Breathe out the relief that overcoming that pain can bring. Make this exercise bigger than yourself: think about a group of people you love, or your firm or workplace, or even your adversaries. Breathe in their challenges, and breathe out relief.

At the end of this practice, you should feel more compassionate and ready to focus on the mindfulness you need to continue on the journey towards inclusion.
